Furthermore, the particular expression of the architecture seeks to echo the local context and builds upon an established modern architectural heritage of public buildings in Dhaka. The slim rectangular footprint of the building is a consequence of a constraint site along the canal. A strategy combining shades, vegetation, passive-air circulation and water harvesting is employed to mitigate the massive heat gain. Precast concrete planters shaped as inverted arches collect water and allow lush greenery to thrive. Thin vertical members provide sunscreen as well as backing for climbing vegetation. The inverted arches are modulated in sizes and positioned rhythmically to echo the water flow in the canal. Simultaneously, they hint at elements in the nearby National Parliament House. A gap between the planters and the envelope allows air circulation between the lush green layer and the envelope, moving cooler, clean air up the facade and into the building, turning the entire west elevation into a giant filter for air and light. Inside, the inverted arches of the planters form an undulating ceiling over public spaces. The development incorporates a row of heritage commercial structures on Yonge Street. The bands define spaces as they climb the structure. At the ground, they form a colonnade, distinctive with a faceted appearance. At the top of the building, they define a sculptural enclosure framing views from the roof-top garden. Visually, the vertical expression accentuates the slenderness and creates an ever-changing play of shadow and light on the surface of the building. In addition, this design strategy results in less glass and an increase in insulated walls, reducing energy loads while providing an impactful and visually cohesive appearance.The bands transform from a cladding system to street-defining elements. The new school is to be located in the heart of Aarhus at “Godsbanearealerne”, close to the railway stations and the city centre. Our proposal is characterized by parallel concrete walls, running along the longer edge of the site, they extend into the landscape at different lengths, giving the building a structured yet informal appearance. The linear spaces are programmable and flexible, opening up into exterior rooms at both ends of the building. The exterior rooms range in function and character, from classrooms and workshop spaces to ramps leading to the subterranean spaces.Splits and voids are orchestrated to allow for public exterior spaces to flow through the site. Atriums provide gathering areas for students, allowing for public presentations and installations to take place. On the second level, some bands (between the organizing concrete walls) transform into steps that lead to the green roof and double as congregation space. We turned circulation inside out to minimize cost and introduce a place that encourages chance encounters between residents. Additionally, this arrangement allows for cross-ventilation through the units. The exterior circulation is conceived as a facade. Precast concrete columns are arranged to generate a subtle yet dynamic appearance. The grided exterior shifts from orthogonal to jagged, depending on the viewer's position.
